Dennis B. Kane was an executive and Emmy-winning producer who was best known for his documentary work.

Kane was vice president and director of television for the National Geographic Society, and executive producer of all National Geographic television specials for two decades.

During this time, National Geographic specials won nearly 300 major television awards, including 25 Emmy Awards, three George Foster Peabody Awards and the Columbia School of Journalism’s DuPont Silver Baton Award.

Kane himself won an Emmy in 1978 for the Nat Geo special titled The Great Whales; he earned a second Emmy nomination three years later, for the Nat Geo special Gorilla.

His numerous other credits included Australia's Animal Mysteries, Among the Chimpanzees, Land of the Tiger, and Survive Siberia, as well as th series The World of Discovery and The Living Edens, and more than 30 National Geographic specials.

In addition, he was a consultant on the 1988 feature film Gorillas in the Mist.

Following his tenure with National Geographic, he served as president of ABC/Kane Productions International, which created more than 80 hours of original programming for ABC, ESPN and PBS.

He was also devoted to such causes as Central American Medical Outreach, Catholic Relief Services, Operation Smile, Smile Train and Save the Children.

Kane died on July 27, 2017, in Leesburg, Virginia. He was 82.
