Al Schmitt was an American recording engineer and record producer.

During his career, he recorded and mixed more than 150 gold and platinum albums.

After serving in the U.S. Navy, Schmitt began working at Apex Recording Studios as an apprentice for legendary producer Tom Dowd.

The 20-time Grammy winner would go on to engineer for artists such as Duke Ellington, Bing Crosby, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Natalie Cole, Thelonious Monk, Jackson Brown, Neil Young, Paul McCartney, Tony Bennett, Madonna, Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, and Michael Jackson.

He also recorded and mixed music for 38 episodes of the television series Peter Gunn and contributed to the films Hatari! (1962), Dune (1984), Hope Floats (1989), Rugrats Go Wild (2003), Anything Else (2003), Winnie the Pooh (2011), Paradox (2018), and The Front Runner (2018).

Schmitt died April 26, 2021, in Bell Canyon, California. He was 91.
