David Davis was an American producer, writer, and director.

Best known for creating the iconic sitcoms The Bob Newhart Show and Taxi (for which he won an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in 1979) – as well as producer and writer for The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Rhoda – Davis began his television career as a script supervisor, including on The Many Lives of Dobie Gillis and the 1963 pilot for Gilligan's Island.

He later was an associate producer and director on My Mother the Car, He and She, and Get Smart. Davis also shot the title sequences for The Bob Newhart Show and Taxi and the memorable "New York" sequence for the 1974 "Rhoda's Wedding" episode of Rhoda, where Valerie Harper raced through the city in a wedding dress.

After retiring in 1979, he consulted on many projects, including as special advisor on the ABC television series Phenom.

Davis died November 4, 2022, in Los Angeles California. He was 86.
