Ned Beatty was an American actor.

On television, Beatty played Det. Stanley “The Big Man” Bolander on NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street, and the chaplain assigned to an American private (Martin Sheen) in his final hours on the somber 1974 NBC telefilm The Execution of Private Slovik.

Beatty also starred as an ex-Marine in charge of a D.C. community center on the short-lived 1977-78 CBS sitcom Szysznyk, and played John Goodman’s father in a recurring role on ABC’s Roseanne.

Beatty received an Emmy Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance in Friendly Fire (1979) opposite Carol Burnett, and a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Family Channel's Magic Hour: Tom Alone (1989).

Other notable credits include The Wool Cap (2004), A Woman Called Golda (1982), Pray TV (1982), the miniseries Robert Kennedy and His Times (1985), Lockerbie: A Night Remembered (1998) and T Bone N Weasel (1992). He also performed musically on television specials for Dolly Parton and The Smothers Brothers.

Beatty died June 13, 2021 in Los Angeles, California. He was 83.
