Robert L. Zilliox, a six-time Primetime Emmy nominee and a luminary in the entertainment industry, left an enduring legacy as a set decorator whose talent and dedication transformed the art of storytelling. As the cofounder and President Emeritus of the Set Decorator Society of America (SDSA), Robert was a trailblazer and advocate for the craft, earning widespread admiration for his contributions.

Robert's journey in set decoration began in the hand prop room at Universal's renowned prop house. His exceptional work ethic and keen eye for detail quickly caught the attention of set decorators and prop professionals. Recognizing his potential, he was promoted to the furniture department, where his skill and artistry shone. Encouraged by colleagues who saw his promise, Robert made the leap to on-set work, a decision that would launch a storied career in both Motion Picture and Television production.

When the opportunity arose to step into the role of set decorator, Robert seized it with determination and excelled. One of his most enduring collaborations was with the iconic actor/director/producer James Garner, who was so impressed with Robert's talent that he ensured Robert contributed to all of his projects over the next 15 years.

Over the course of his career, Robert worked on more than 50 Film and Television productions, creating captivating and memorable environments that elevated storytelling to new heights. His artistry earned him six Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Set Decoration/Art Direction, a testament to his dedication to excellence.

More than once, his location work earned him citizenship awards and keys to the city for his work within the communities that hosted productions, a testament to his ability to elevate the professionalism of any production and foster good relations to the benefit the people in those cities and towns. His passion for his craft carried over into his personal time, earning him speaking engagements in AFI workshops, film festivals and local colleges.

Robert's proudest professional accomplishment, however, was cofounding the Set Decorator Society of America- serving as President Emeritus. He was elected to the position of President three times by the membership. Through his leadership, the SDSA became a cornerstone of the industry, fostering community, supporting emerging talent, and celebrating the art of set decoration. His contributions were so impactful that Robert was honored as the first recipient of the SDSA Lifetime Achievement Award. This prestigious award, endowed by SDSA business member E.C. Props in memory of founder Earl Copperman, serves as the centerpiece of the society's annual awards program, recognizing outstanding decorators and their contributions to the craft.

Beyond his personal accolades, Robert was a tireless supporter of his crew, vendors, and fellow artists. He created countless opportunities for others, mentoring and inspiring the next generation of talent. His generosity, vision, and unwavering commitment to excellence continue to influence and uplift the world of Set Decoration.
