Steven Bochco was an American television producer and writer.

He began his career working for Universal Pictures as a writer and then story editor on Ironside, Columbo, and McMillan & Wife.

In 1976, Bochco left Universal after 12 years for Grant Tinker’s MTM Productions. Bochco's Hill Street Blues was championed by NBC’s Fred Silverman, who wanted a series along the lines of the 1981 Paul Newman film Fort Apache, the Bronx, about the personal lives of cops.

Hill Street Blues was followed by other successes over the next two decades, including Doogie Howser, M.D., L.A. Law, and NYPD Blue, all helmed by Bochco.

Bochco’s last major series was Murder in the First which ran from 2014 to 2016.

Bochco was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1996.

Bochco died April 1, 2018, in Los Angeles, California. He was 74.
