Achievement in editing was honored at the 55th annual American Cinema Editors Eddie Awards, held Sunday night, February 20, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
In the television categories, Michael Berenbaum and Wendey Stanzler received the award for half-hour series editing for the “American Girl in Paris—Part 2” episode of HBO’s Sex and the City, and for one-hour series editing the prize went to Phil Neel for the “Hired Guns” installment of ABC’s Boston Legal. Michael Brown, who edited HBO’s Something the Lord Made, triumphed in the category of miniseries or motion picture editing trophy for noncommercial television. Among the miniseries or motion pictures for commercial television nominees, the winner was Terilyn A. Shropshire for the FX movie Redemption.
In the feature film categories, Thelma Schoonmaker won the Eddie for dramatic film for the Miramax/Warner Bros. co-production The Aviator, directed by Martin Scorsese, and Paul Hirsch prevailed in the comedy or musical category for the Universal release Ray, directed by Taylor Hackford. The documentary award went to Paul Crowder for the acclaimed surfing movie Riding Giants, directed by Stacy Peralta. Michael Darrow of the American Film Institute was singled out for student editing.
The ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year honor went to writer-director James L. Brooks, and the Lifetime Career Achievement Awards were granted to Dave Blewitt and Jim Clark.
