Over a career spanning six decades, Jane Fonda has garnered numerous accolades, including an Emmy, two Oscars, two BAFTA Awards and seven Golden Globes. February 23 will mark another prestigious milestone, when she is honored with the SAG Life Achievement Award at the 31st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony. Fonda will be the 60th recipient of the award, which acknowledges her work as an actor and a humanitarian.
In a statement announcing the honor, SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher said, "Jane Fonda is a trailblazer and an extraordinary talent — a dynamic force who has shaped the landscape of entertainment, advocacy and culture with unwavering passion. We honor Jane not only for her artistic brilliance but for the profound legacy of activism and empowerment she has created."
Fonda made her motion picture debut in the 1960 comedy Tall Story and went on to appear in more than 50 others, including Walk on the Wild Side, Barefoot in the Park, Barbarella, Cat Ballou, They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, Julia, The China Syndrome, 9 to 5 and On Golden Pond. She won Best Actress Oscars for the 1971 drama Klute and the 1978 drama Coming Home.
Her distinguished television work includes an Emmy Award for her role in the 1984 ABC telefilm The Dollmaker. She returned to television in 2012 with a recurring role in HBO's The Newsroom, for which she earned two Emmy nominations. Her success continued with Grace and Frankie, co-starring Lily Tomlin, which ran from 2015 to 2022, making it Netflix's longest-running series to date.
Beyond her artistic achievements, Fonda has been a vocal advocate for social causes since the 1960s, championing the antiwar movement, gender equality, civil rights and environmental justice. She co-founded the Hollywood Women’s Political Committee in 1984 and the Women's Media Center in 2005. In 2022, she launched the Jane Fonda Climate PAC to combat the climate crisis, which she cites as her life’s work. She celebrated her 85th birthday by raising $1 million for her nonprofit, the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power & Potential, which provides resources to adolescents to improve their overall health and wellbeing.
"I am deeply honored and humbled to be this year's recipient of the SAG Life Achievement Award," Fonda said in response to the announcement. "SAG-AFTRA works tirelessly to protect the working actor and to ensure that union members are being treated equitably in all areas, and I am proud to be a member as we continue to work to protect generations of performers to come."
